ASMR - Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response

Somehow I found ASMR videos on YouTube around the same time that social distancing began. My 20 year-old, Ziola was frustrated when I began raving as she tried telling me about them previously. My 18 year-old, Layla has also been watching them for a while, apparently. I really should pay more attention to hints the Universe sends my way. Plus, I've got some smart and intuitive adult children. So, basically YouTube artists produce tingles through the use of sound and visual triggers that make us feel oh so good. The videos seem to work as if by magic, but there is research out there that explains and supports the science behind the process if you want to look further into it.
The easiest way to describe how ASMR feels while triggered is the same as when I get my hair washed and brushed at the salon. Some videos even use this as a role play to induce the autonomous response that the viewer is seeking. For me it's a very sensual experience if I am paying attention without distraction. ASMR makes me feel cared for even though I don't know the You Tuber personally. During this time of isolation I have found this to be a great comfort. I'm grateful to be one that is super sensitive to triggers.
These videos are often designed to promote sleep and relaxation. I've found I fall asleep much faster if I pop one on in the evening while laying in bed. There are videos without talking that are composed of sounds only. These work great if you want to close your eyes and drift away. There's something soothing about them that's best experienced ourselves. It reminds me of the feeling of goosebumps one might have when feeling moved or connected to someone's story in a way that's almost overwhelming. Descriptions aren't adequate to relay the tingling sensations that ensue, but you get the idea.
I suppose I wanted to broach this topic as so many people are suffering right now with anxiety, fear, and worry. ASMR can help ease the suffering for some folks. There are many tools we can use to care for ourselves, but this is one that takes little effort for someone who may be feeling too overwhelmed to do much else. Of course, these videos can also aid those who are in other places on the emotional spectrum. I invite you to try one of these videos and have an open mind. Get yourself comfortable, without distractions. Perhaps, dim the lights and get some aromatherapy going, whatever suits you. What do you have to lose? My love to you all.
